Marcos Gate

The man in the middle of this photo is Marcos Pena. The white Suburban behind him is ours. Marcos and the other two fellows were arrested after a high speed chase in our Suburban on Sunday night. News of this came last night from a friend in Tepic where up to that point we thought our Suburban was living at the repair shop getting a new water pump. It appears that these three men had other plans for the girl. Marcos worked for us, he drove for us, he gave us advice on where to get things and we in turn trusted him. I feel somewhat foolish about that right now. Once when my son was driving back to Vegas, Marcos rode with him to the border to make sure he was not alone driving in Mexico. When our daughter came with three of her girlfriends it was Marcos that watched over them making sure they stayed safe and drove them back to the airport. Marcos has children, he has a wife with cancer and till this happen he had a job. I am pretty confused on what makes a man do this?
So today we will start the process of trying to get "the get away car" back. This will require an attorney so thank god we already have a good one in Tepic. I am sure it will cost us both money and time. And really I have no idea if we will ever get the old Suburban back, it's Mexico. But I do know that I will never get back the trust for an employee again. I will be forever jaded in the way I look at the people that work for us. So although Sunday night our truck was taken, something much deeper was taken from me, and I mourn the loss of it.

1. You weren't in the Suburban at the time,
2. Think of it as a domestication process, much like dogs. They have different perspectives and priorities and sometimes we just have to roll with it,
3. I much prefer the Mexican way of taking lineup photos. There's something about the shame factor in making a display of the thieves and loot in a public place.
4. I'm still highly disappointed with Marcos. We gave him a top-level tutorial in packing that Suburban to the rafters and beyond on our last trip from airport to Costco to Casa Lagarto. If that's the entire haul, it was a wasted tutorial.

Even though I never met the guy, I can't believe this. What a waste of your energy and emotions. He must've been pretty desperate to do this, though. :C

But we'll still come visit you! It'll take more than a hijacked Suburban full of electronics and trust to scare us away.

Greg and I share in your disappointment in Marcos and are very sad that he pulled YOU TWO into this mess by using "a privilege" as his getaway car! Was the water pump really out? We met Marcos on our very first visit to Mexico (before you're beautiful home was built)and had seen him on every return trip. We ALSO liked him alot! Like you, we are having difficulties understanding why he'd risk his family and future for THAT JUNK?! Or risk others lives for it! Especially when you consider that by being employed by you guys (by Mexico standards) he was able to live a lifestyle considered above upper middle class. That was due only to your trust and generosity! We hope you do not give up on people because not everyone makes bad choices like this! There are MANY people in your Mexican community that DO deserve your trust and when gained, DO NOT take it for granted! Don't throw out the baby with the bath water OR stop being so wonderful to those who depend on you down there! Even though this situation is disheartening, you and Paul have made an enormous difference in SOOO MANY PEOPLES LIVES THERE AND IN THE STATES and you really are appreciated!!

On a lighter note, we really enjoyed Jeff's comments, especially #3. Maybe the US could learn a few lessons!? The number of repeat offenders would decline tremendously!!

I asked Greg if he had received and interpreted the news article you sent, his response was, "Whatever Robyn". He did laugh as I ran down my list of ways he could help by contacting the attorney, etc. He's happy we all have him as our comic relief! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this all started out as HIS material!? I'm just gently reminding him....as we all should continue to do!!

Hi guys! This was so sad to read and I'm sorry it happened to you. But, from what I know of you, you will continue to give people the benefit of the doubt unless proven otherwise.

I imagine Marcos is feeling quite the fool and ashamed right now. I hope he's learned a life lesson.
