Tere gets Married

There are so many wonderful memories in Mexico. Moments that you want to hold in your heart and memory forever. This was one of those moments. We have of course been to many weddings, more than I can count I think. But there was something that made this special for us. Maybe it was because it was so different and yet much the same. There was the bride (Tere our maid) and her new husband (Martin) and their families and all their friends from the villages they live in. There were the grandparents, the uncles, the aunts, the cousins, the children and of course the dogs. The church had flowers and the preist. The reception had food and beer. All the things you would find at a wedding north of the border. But somehow in this little village in the middle of a tabacco field nestled up againest the mountains on the pacific coast, I felt different. Maybe it was because these people were there to celebrate and watch the union of these two people. They were not there to party, or see what kind of "spread" was but on. It was so simple and rural (did I mention the reception was in a horse pasture?). We walked from the church to the reception through the streets (dirt) and people cheered and threw confetti. They served tortillas and pork (I think) and everything came from the kitchen of Martin's family. Their mother's cried and held their children tight before letting them go on this new adventure.
When it was all over, Tere and Martin loaded into our Suburban and left for their new home in Oatates. A new home for both of them. A home that has dirt floors in the kitchen a bathroom in the backyard. But when we went to visit them they were so proud of how good the house was starting to look. I was so humbled by the two of them. I will always hold that evening in my heart.
